A Bold New Day for Penn State

True freshman QB Robert Bolden did not shy away from what he knows best, how to win.

As fall weather came upon Happy Valley this Saturday there was doubt as to who would lead the Nittany Lions under center come kick-off time. True freshman Robert Bolden, a name unknown until 3 days ago, surprisingly got the nod from coach Joe Paterno. Seeing how Penn State slaughtered the Penguins 44-14, it appears the ole ball coach knew exactly what he was doing.

The Nittany Lions were slow out of the gate, but when the second half kicked-off with Chaz Powell’s 100 yard TD kick-off return, the Nittany Lions never looked back. In playing just 3 quarters, QB Bolden surpassed all expectations throwing 2 beautiful touchdown passes and amassing 239 yards going 20 of 29 in his first collegiate start. The young QB showed impressive poise in the pocket checking off his receivers and hitting the open WRs with tight spirals.

Though playing a weaker Youngstown State, Bolden took advantage of the defense’s soft cushion and exploited the young secondary while making clutch third-down throws. The 100,000 plus crowd and the roar of the Lion did not phase this 18 year-old who will have his first true test next week when he leads the team to hostile Tuscaloosa to battle the defending national champs Alabama.
