As Nebraska prepares for its last season in the Big 12, head coach Bo Pelini is keeping a tight wrap around the progress of preseason. To limit distractions, yesterday Pelini announced that practices will be closed to the media until the weekend. He did not give any particular reason but one can suspect he wants to exit the conference with a bang and doesn’t want the next couple of days leaked to the public. He also suggested that he was frustrated with the media’s handling of linebacker Sean Fisher’s injury. The blasting of the news on the internet and the subsequent barrage of phone calls to Fisher’s family, the university, and his high school coach was out of line.
Pelini did state that the temporary media ban will be lifted on Saturday and in the meantime the school will offer information regarding injuries. To keep the lid on even tighter, practices will also be closed to former players and current players’ families. This attitude is fairly new to the Huskers as Pelini is typically media friendly.
As for Nebraska, the Big 12 title is certainly possible as Pelini returns almost his entire offense and has a strong defense that is very deep and attuned to Carl Pelini’s system. The Big 12 North should be a fairly smooth ride, it’s the Big 12 championship game that will be the true test for the Huskers.
