‘Cuse fans got some comforting news today as star running back Delone Carter returns to the field as Syracuse kicks-off preseason practice. Carter was suspended back in April for his involvement in an on campus one-punch brawl with a fellow student in late February. With his misdemeanor assault charges pending, there was doubt about Carter’s future.
Fortunately for Carter, Syracuse began practice. With the lack of quality players, coach Doug Marrone quickly realized that he is short in the skill positions department. One quick fix to the problem, convince the school’s judicial review board to reinstate a suspended Carter and get him back on the field.
Despite Syracuse’s abysmal record last season, Carter led the Orange on the ground with 1,021 yards and 11 TDs. These are numbers Marrone will need in 2010 if he hopes to field a successful campaign. If Marrone can’t return the team to glory, he best not renew his lease come 2011.
Since RB Averin Collier was suspended for academic reasons, Antwon Bailey took the starting RB spot with Carter in the wings. As soon as Carter gets back into playing shape, expect to see him trump Bailey in the depth chart.
