Because USC’s culture is anything but desirable, it’s fitting the program was hit with another black eye. Today, the Tennessee Titans filed a lawsuit against USC and coach Lane Kiffin for “maliciously” interfering with coach Kennedy Pola’s contract when they lured him away from the Titans. Coach Jeff Fisher, a USC alum, was irked by the lack of respect and professionalism displayed by Kiffin for failing to contact Fisher or the team before pursuing Pola.
Fisher hired Pola through February 2011 and Kiffin was well aware of Pola’s contract but did not care. The unscrupulous Kiffin contacted Pola unbeknownst to Fisher and induced Pola to breach his contract with Tennessee to join the Trojans. Kiffin could have hired Pola without any issues if he just obtained permission to speak to Pola through the proper channels by contacting Fisher and the team president. With the Titans training camp right around the corner, the team is left without a running backs coach. The suit is not seeking that Pola return to the Titans but rather seeks monetary damages to include punitive damages and attorneys fees.
This is just another negative mark on Kiffin’s resume that is littered with acts of unprofessionalism and disrespect. All eyes will be on Kiffin this season as USC enters a two year span where it cannot go bowling.
The civil suit was filed in Davidson County Chancery Court, Tennessee. TheMatador will keep tabs on this suit as it progresses.
