Ron Zook’s secondary took a hit this weekend after CB Walter Aikens was nabbed for possession of stolen property in a sting operation. As a result of his arrest, the Illini scratched Aikens from today’s spring game and suspended him indefinitely.
Early Friday morning, Aikens was arrested and charged with a Class 4 felony for his connection with the theft of electronic items from Snyder and Forbes Halls. An undercover officer arranged to purchase a laptop computer from Aikens. Aikens agreed to sell the laptop which happened to be stolen. After the transaction was completed, police obtained a search warrant and found the money Aikens received from the laptop.
Aikens was a potential starter for Zook’s secondary. As a freshman, he garnered 32 tackles in ten games and continued to show signs of understanding football at the college level. Unfortunately, Aikens was hanging out with the wrong crowd as he got involved in this criminal activity with teammate Lendell Buckner. Buckner was charged on April 16th for stealing, among other electronics, an Ipod and laptop computer.
Aikens appeared in court today, posted his $3,000 bond and was released. His formal hearing is scheduled for Monday. Meanwhile, Buckner is due back in court in June.
