Articles are a plenty regarding colleges getting hit hard by the recession. One way to curb the economic downturn is to raise ticket prices, parking fees, and concession stands. Louisiana State University is coming up with a creative idea to make some money. According to the school’s newspaper, LSU unveiled a proposal to build a microbrewery on campus at The Cook Hotel.
That is correct, the chancellor, Michael Martin, would utilize the microbrewery to teach students and ultimately aspiring brewmasters the art and science of brewing beer. However, the real impetus to bottle and sell LSU brew is because of the potential economic impact. Mr. Martin is convinced that this particular idea will generate revenue for LSU and it’s athletic programs.
The school’s chair of the Food Science Department, John Finley, is considering a traditional lager, a light beer, and an amber beer. To show school spirit, Finley will also create a purple and gold beer (similar to a black and tan). As word of this idea spread, an Anheuser-Busch distributor, Mockler Beverage Company, has already shown interest in partnering up with LSU to help fund the project.
Of course there is some negative criticism regarding a public school brewing beer on campus, but there are 92,400 (Tiger Stadium Capacity) reasons why it’s a good idea.
LSU fans are already having fun naming the brews. As for the amber beer, rumor is abuzz that it will be bottled as Tiger Piss.
