Former KU coach Mark Mangino was certainly no martyr, but it looks like the Jayhawks’ Turner Gill is the saint they have been so desperately seeking. Students and fans got a glimpse of the coach’s character during the Members of Leadership Lawrence class this past week.
Coach Gill presented himself as a steadfast clean cut coach with the heart of a lion who will not stand for any insubordination. This was evident in his hiring of assistance coaches, “I was not going to hire anybody who was going to be cursing and using that type of language. We are here to develop these people as young men, so we don’t need to do that.”
To build team character, he is requiring his players to donate at least 2 hours of their time per semester for volunteer work. He is also requiring his players to go to class and take notes. He will get personally involved with every player even if that means calling family members if there is cause for concern.
Ultimately, Gill is at KU to win football games, but more power to him for introducing goodwill to a team that was choked by an evil man’s uncontrollable temper. There must be s sense of welcomed relief in the KU locker room, but oddly not so much for the fans.
