And then there were two…

Zach Mettenberger, a top QB prospect, may be handing out bologna sandwiches instead of footballs in 2010 after his recent arrest.

The highly anticipated QB battle between three potential stars at the University of Georgia may have gotten a little less competitive this past weekend with the arrest of QB Zach Mettenberger. At the end of last season, Georgia’s coaching staff knew that there were three top prospects to lead the Bulldogs to conference supremacy in 2010: Logan Gray, Zach Mettenberger, and Aaron Murray.

All three candidates brought something different to the field. Gray is a very fast and athletic QB. While Mettenberger has an extremely strong arm, and Murray has the heart and courage of a lion (it was evident when he lead his high school team to the state championships all while playing on a half recovered broken fibula).

The competition weakend on Sunday with Mettenberger, who is a redshirt freshman and only 18, getting into some trouble with the law. He was arrested for underage drinking, consumption and possession of alcohol, possession of a fake ID, and disorderly conduct. All of these charges are jailable offenses and come with heavy fines.

Though not all the facts have been released and the criminal status of Mettenberger remains to be seen, there is no word on what Georgia will do with Mettenberger. As it stands, with Mettenberger’s legal issues, Gray, being the back-up junior from last season, should have the position all but locked up, with Murray, another redshirt freshman, as the back-up.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this plays out for the Bulldog nation. In the meantime, we will keep you updated on Mettenberger’s status both on and off the field.
