Paper Chase

"I'm proud of my players for doing that," Morriss said, according to an incident report. "This was the best team-building exercise we have ever done."

It looks as if Texas A&M Commerce head coach Guy Morriss is trying to challenge the Citadel’s Miguel Starks for crazy college football story of the week honors. On February 19th., Dionte Garrett and DeAndre’ Bowers, both members of the Texas A&M Commerce football team, were arrested and charged after being nabbed as part of a campus wide drug bust.

Scrambling to do damage control after the incident, members of the football team set out to snatch copies of The East Texan (TA&MC’s campus newspaper) that featured the drug bust story on the front page. It’s estimated that around 2,000 school newspapers were taken by the players. Campus cameras even captured two football players swiping the papers en masse. Running to his team’s rescue, head coach Guy Morriss dismissed the thefts and even mentioned  how proud he was of his players for doing so. “I’m proud of my players for doing that,” Morriss said, according to an incident report. “This was the best team-building exercise we have ever done.” Morriss, not one to hold his tongue, also took swipes at the school newspaper and even questioned the police report. Morriss asked, according to the police report, how taking a free newspaper would be considered a theft. He was then informed that a statement inside the newspaper said that the first paper was free but each additional copy cost 25 cents.

East Texan editor James Bright is furious over this matter and is demanding an apology from Morriss.”I will not be pleased until there is some disciplinary action taken toward Guy Morriss, and he apologizes publicly. The fact that he advocated those actions is shameful.” School and athletic officials, minus Morriss, met with Bright yesterday and decided that the athletic program will pay the school paper the estimated $1,110.00 in losses it suffered as a result of the heist. This should get very interesting as more fireworks are expected to fly before this is all is said and done.
