The Citadel is generally known for producing distinguished alumni, not harden criminals. This past weekend QB Miguel Starks was charged (along with three others) in connection with an armed robbery in Charleston, South Carolina.
Starks, who is only 19 and hails from Atlanta, Georgia, and former teammate LB Reginald Rice, 22, were charged with armed robbery, first degree burglary, kidnapping, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. The twist in this story is that the victim is apparently one of Starks’ own coaches at The Citadel, assistant coach Joshua Harpe of West Ashley. The ballplayers allegedly tied up Coach Harpe in his home at gun point and took his wallet, electronic equipment and some jewelry.
Others involved in the armed robbery included two College of Charleston students who were also arrested this past weekend.
The Citadel did not release an official statement as the investigation is ongoing but Coach Kevin Higgins did have something to say, “Like the rest of The Citadel community we are shocked, angry and saddened by the alleged events involving Miguel Starks.” “Senseless does not begin to describe the situation. Miguel is an only child, loved and provided well for by his parents Michael and Sharon. He has many talents and football is just one of them.”
At Sunday’s hearing, Starks was denied bail. Starks is still enrolled in the Corps of Cadets, but it looks like the state pen will be his new home.
