During the 2002 national championship game, all eyes were on Ohio State RB Maurice Clarett as he scored the game winning touchdown in double overtime against the heavily favored Miami Hurricanes. Since that glories TD, it has been all downhill for Clarett.
Clarett pleaded guilty back in September 2006 for possession of a firearm while holding up two people outside of a Columbus bar. Since then, he has been a guest of the state and he currently resides at the Toledo Correctional Institution while trying to earn a bachelor’s degree in geriatrics and gerontology.
Now eyes are back on Clarett as he is seeking an early release from prison. His sentence landed him 7 ½ years with a possible release in 3 ½ years. As he has served over half of his time, he is going to petition the state for an early release. His attorney stated that Clarett has been a model prisoner, who has been taking college courses and has led health and fitness programs for older inmates. Clarett also has shared his story with troubled youths involved in Scared Straight-style programs.
There is no word on when Clarett will file his petition or what he will do if he is granted an early release. Some are saying he wants to return to football and regain the legacy that he started while a Buckeye.
