When Derek Dooley left Ruston, Louisiana, home of the Squire Creek Peach Festival, Louisiana Tech tapped Arizona’s offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes to take the helm. Now that Dykes is the head coach, he is the front man for disciplining his players. First up to receive the wrath of Dykes is 5th year senior QB Ross A. Jenkins.
According to reports, Jenkins was stopped during a checkpoint at about 1:30 a.m. early Sunday morning. When a member of the drunk-driving task force noticed a strong odor of alcohol, Jenkins was tested and blew a .228. Much to the dismay of Jenkins, his blood alcohol level topped the charts at almost three times the legal limit.
Jenkins was immediately arrested and charged with a DWI. He was able to post bond and was freed. For Jenkins, this arrest is not going to get him any bonus points with coach Dykes. In fact, it’s a huge disappointment for the team’s quarterback. As a 5th year senior and team leader, Jenkins started 20 games and last season he threw for 2,095 yards with 17 TDs and 5 INTs. He had a QB rating of 135.89.
Jenkins is expected to take snaps under center one last time in 2010 and should show vast improvement under Dykes. Dykes was both the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach with Arizona since 2007. Dykes’ offensive schemes set single-season records for passing yards, completions and TDs. Jenkins better get his act together quick as he was given a gift with Dykes being his new teacher.
Jenkins must straighten up by spring practice as he is letting his talent go to waste. It will be interesting to see how Dykes handles Jenkins’ DWI. Dykes and Jenkins are supposed to be the keys to improving off of last season’s poor showing of posting only 4 wins.
