The 85th edition of the East West Shrine Game was played yesterday in Orlando, Florida. Northwestern’s Mike Kafka (18-27 150 yards) led the east to the game winning drive by hitting Penn State’s Andrew Quarless with 5 ticks left on the clock. In the huddle I told Kafka, ‘Just throw it up and I’ll make a play.’ He threw a perfect pass,” Quarless said. “It just feels good to go out with a bang.” The Nittany Lions also had a strong showing by quarterback Daryll Clark as well. Clark went 7 of 10 for 75 yards. The three Big Ten representatives to the East team were the heroes of the day.
While the game was good for Kafka, Quarless, and the East, the same can’t be said for Kansas’ Todd Reesing. The Jayhawk signal caller completed only 2 passes on the day while also throwing an interception. Reesing, who’s had somewhat of a disappointing end of his career at KU was hoping to sell his trade to the NFL scouts during Shrine Week. Although Reesing shattered nearly every passing record at Kansas, scouts are still pessimistic about Reesing’s height (5-11). “I’m tall enough to ride the rides over at Universal Studios,” said Reesing, who was 2 for 5 passing for 11 yards with the interception. “I was a successful quarterback in high school and college, and I can do the same as a professional.”
The East West Shrine game is one in which college seniors work with NFL coaches for the week with the hopes of becoming noticed and catching some steam before the NFL draft. The 2010 Senior Bowl will take place next week in Mobile, Alabama.
