The Texas Longhorns are opening up camp today without two strong reserve players due to injuries. RDT Michael “The Big Cat” Wilcoxon (So. 6’3, 285 lbs.) from Aledo, Texas, who played in only 6 games last season has continuous chronic medical issues and is no longer able to suit up. He was projected to back of Kheeston Randall (So. 6’5, 275 lbs.).
TE Josh Marshall (So. 6’4, 235 lbs.), who missed all of last season with shoulder injury, is also calling it quits. He has said his shoulder just isn’t healing and can’t play due to risking an already severely damaged shoulder. Marshall stated, “I spent a lot of time talking with the doctors and trainers about my future. I love football and the opportunity it has given me, but my family and the doctors agree what’s best for my future is to let my body get healthy.”
Fortunately for both players, Texas placed them on medical hardship scholarships and will continue their education at Texas. Per NCAA rules, when the players receive medical hardship scholarships, they do not count towards the programs 85 scholarship limit. However, this is ultimately bad news for the Longhorns as they are already short on DT and TE positions.
Mack Brown and company will miss these players not only for their hard work but for their positive presence they brought into the locker-room and on the field.
