If the O-line protects Keenum, Houston and Co. will have a tremendous year

Yesterday, Houston Coach Kevin Sumlin reported for duty as the Houston Cougars officially began its 2009 season. Last season, Houston was 8-5, this season they are gunning for the C-USA championship. The team can get there because of one person, QB Case Keenum.

By season’s end, gun-slinger Keenum will be a household name outside of Houston. He led the nation in offense with 5,241 yards; 2nd in passing with 5020 yards; and, third in passing TDs with 44. With all his targets returning, WR Tyron Carrier, WE Patrick Edwards, and WR Chaz Rodriguez, he is destined to topple his fantastic numbers from last season.

Since most of the offensive firepower returns, look for big numbers from all skill positions. Additionally, the conference this year is wide open leaving a perfect opportunity for the Cougars to make a serious run at their second crown in four years.

The key to this season’s success is if the O-line provides enough time for Keenum to hit his open targets.

The question remains, does Houston have another Andre Ware on its hands?
