Stanford running back Tyler Gaffney is trading in his football helmet for a baseball cap. The would be senior running back is forgoing his final year of eligibility to play professional baseball with MLB’s Pittsburgh Pirates.
Gaffney was a two-sport star at Stanford who excelled at both football and baseball. Last season on the gridiron, Gaffney scampered for 449 yards and seven touchdowns as a back-up. On the diamond, he hit .245 with 17 RBIs before being drafted in the 24th round by the Pirates. He had a career batting average of .301 and led the Cardinal baseball team in steals.
For the Cardinal faithful, the backfield will be fine as leading rusher Stepfan Tayler returns with junior running back Anthony Wilkerson in his shadow. In addition, Stanford has a potential star at RB in Barry J. Sanders.
