Is Stefon Diggs coming to Maryland?

Stefon Diggs, the last of the 5-star wide receivers who has yet to commit to a program, is set to announce his intentions this Friday night. Ohio State, Auburn and Florida are all rumored front-runners, but is Maryland going to be his future home? After a recent trip to College Park and the signing of Diggs’ two high school teammates, the Terrapins pose to be a real threat.

Teammates OT Mike Madaras and Under Armour All-American RB Wes Brown both recently committed to Maryland. These signings prompted Diggs to keep Maryland on his radar. Additionally, Brown is a close friend of Diggs and in an interview last year the two ballyhooed recruits said they wanted to play together:

OK, let’s play that angle. Are you guys a package deal heading to college? Do you want to play with each other?

Diggs: Yes, that’s the idea.

Brown: Yes, but just because a coach recruits one of us doesn’t mean he’s automatically getting the other one. He’s got to want the other one, too. He can’t just be like, ‘Oh, we’ll take Wes because we really want Stefon.’ He has to have a role for both of us.

Diggs: Right. You can’t just offer one of us and then I don’t hear from you for a few months.”

Though the interview took place last year, the two are inseparable on-and-off the field making Maryland a serious contender. However, Diggs wants to play for a powerhouse and in reality, how attractive is a 2-10 team that hasn’t wont 10-games since 2003?

Despite Diggs playing football in the Terrapins’ backyard, Maryland has failed to secure blue-chip athletes from the Washington D.C. metropolitan area which is known for producing top talent. For instance, D.C. area natives DT Eddie Goldman and CB Ronald Darby both were highly recruited but both dismissed Maryland for the greener pastures of Florida State. But with the signing of Brown and potentially Diggs, this could change the direction of recruiting for the Terrapins.

Diggs is a playmaker on the fiend and at Good Counsel High School he excelled at running back, wide receiver, cornerback and pretty much anywhere else he played. He is a true athlete that will have an immediate impact in Maryland’s inept offense.

Maryland is certainly on Diggs’ radar and with the signing of teammate Wes Brown, Terrapin fans may have a reason to celebrate. After all, why would a high-profile athlete bypass ESPN and other major news networks to make his public announcement this Friday evening (10 p.m.) on Comcast SportsNet Washington—a D.C. regional sports news network.
