Former Northern Illinois and NFL wide receiver Sam Hurd was indicted earlier this week and was named the ringleader of a drug-dealing network spanning from Texas to Illinois. The indictment was handed up to a grand jury on January 4, 2012 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
Hurd and co-conspirator Toby Lujan were both named in the indictment for possession with the intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and attempted possession with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.
Hurd was arrested on December 14, 2011 outside a Chicago area steakhouse after accepting a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover agent. He also stated he was interested in purchasing five to 10 kilograms of cocaine at $25,000 per kilogram and 1,000 pounds of marijuana at $450 per pound.
He is currently free on a $100,000 bond. If convicted, Hurd could face up to 10 years to life in prison for conspiracy and up to 40 years for possession. An arrest warrant was issued for Lujan after he attempted to purchase four kilograms of cocaine from an agent. The indictment also seeks the forfeiture of $80,000 in cash and Hurd’s 2010 Cadillac Escalade.
Hurd spent his college days at Northern Illinois where he impressively hauled in 143 receptions (5th in school history) for 2,323 yards (2nd in school history) and 21 TDs (3rd in school history). Though he was undrafted in 2006, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys where he played for five seasons. He then signed with the Chicago Bears in 2011, but was released following his drug-related arrest.
