If you are a student/athlete at Alice High School in Alice, Texas, you will be kicked off your respective sport if you are caught kissing someone of the same sex. This just happened to a 17 year-old male, who was on the school’s varsity cheerleading team. The young male was seen kissing a boy inside the school’s band room last week when the school’s surveillance camera caught him in action. As punishment, the school kicked him off the Coyotes cheerleading squad and suspended him for two days because of his sexual orientation.
The school is overlooking the fact that no other student has been kicked off any sport for kissing someone of the opposite sex; rather, the school seems to be enforcing its code of conduct in a discriminatory manner—targeting homosexuals.
The suspended student, who did not want to be identified, had this to say about the situation, “they never check cameras for anything unless something is stolen,” the young man said, asking not be identified. “We would be the ones getting caught because I’m sure we were the only ones, sexual orientation wise, being caught like that.”
“In this school [kissing] is everywhere, if that were the case, suspending everyone for that, half the school would be suspended,” he said.
However, according to the school’s Cheer Handbook, cheerleaders are held to a higher standard, which “requires students to adhere to a higher standard of conduct than that which applies to the general student population.”
The school’s response, “the matter is still under review by the district.”
The boy’s parents plan to pursue legal action.
In the meantime, help this student and contact Principal Lucy Munoz at 361-664-0126 or District Superintendent Salvador Cavazos at drscavazos@aliceisd.net to request that the cheerleader be reinstated.
