Earlier when we reported about Ava Maria’s inaugural football season, it was met with some resistance. Putting the negative comments aside, the 2011 Gyrenes are gearing up for their inaugural football season which is quickly approaching. Unfortunately, the university is dealing with budget concerns and may have to implement pay cuts, among other things, for the athletic department.
With budget cuts looming, there are also concerns regarding the financing of an on-campus home football field. To bolster the budget, in 2010 the university launched the 5 Yard Club campaign. The school is reaching out to donors to each donate $22,500, which will cover 5-yards of artificial turf. If you are really feeling generous, you can purchase your own endzone for $40,000. In return, you will have your name forever placed in the inside cover of every media football guide.
Presently, the Gyrenes do not have an on-campus football field and are still exploring where they will play their home games—some options include playing at a local high school field. As it stands, the team’s first game is September 17 against Birmingham Southern University. However, there is a tentative game scheduled for September 10, 2011 against Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama.
You can still be a part of the legacy with the university still seeking donors:
