Most label football players as jocks who have a free pass in the classroom, but University of Alabama QB Greg McElroy is nothing of the sort. McElroy is as much an athlete as an academic. Over a year ago, McElroy began the tedious application for a Rhodes Scholarship (a prestigious international award which is only given to 32 U.S. applicants per year). Unfortunately, McElroy found out this weekend that he was not selected as one of the two among 12 finalists for the Rhodes.
McElroy made it to the final round from District 7 which represents applicants from Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida. McElroy gave a tremendous effort and Alabama should be proud of his accomplishments on-and-off the field.
When asked about the outcome, “We gave it our best shot, going up against a few MIT students, a Yale grad, a Harvard grad, and Naval Academy grad, I’m just proud to have been able to make it to this point and represent Alabama for that.”
McElroy hopes to earn a coveted NFL roster spot next season, but if that doesn’t work out, he is gunning for Northwestern Law School. During his career at Alabama, aside from the BCS National Championship, he has been on the President’s list twice (4.0 GPA) and the Dean’s list four times. This is coming from a student athlete who has a full class load and devotes at least 20 hours per week to football.
