Some sad and disturbing news is coming out of Ohio State. Top recruit Jamel Turner was gunned down and listed in critical condition after suffering multiple gunshot wounds early yesterday morning in Youngstown, Ohio. According to sources, when police responded to a 911 call, they found Turner hunched over at the corner of Manchester and Oakwood barely hanging on to his life. Police then found a 17 year old female, Tracy Banks, shot to death inside a nearby home.
Turner was immediately taken to Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital where he is now listed as “hour by hour.”
The police currently have a suspect in custody who is said to be 18 year old Melvin Shaw, Tracy Banks’ boyfriend. Though unconfirmed, it is believed that Shaw broke into the home and shot both Turner and Banks.
Coach Tressel was informed of the shooting and issued the following statement:
“I’m so sad to hear of Jamel’s misfortune. I have not communicated with Jamel, but am certainly praying for him at this time.”
This is the second time Turner was a victim of gunfire this past year. He narrowly escaped a drive by shooting this past April. Fortunately in that incident, he suffered only minor injuries.
Here at The Matador, our thought and prayers go out to Turner’s friends and family.
