There is a blaze under Dan Hawkins seat and WR Markques Simas just added more fuel to the fire. The young Simas failed to add to his Outlook calendar that he had a criminal hearing on May 12, 2010 for his DUI charge. Simas never showed up to the courthouse. As customary practice, the court issued a bench warrant for his failure to appear.
If you don’t recall, this all started when Simas was arrested back on Feb 12th upon being pulled over at 2:20 a.m. for an illegal U-turn. After he failed his field sobriety test, he blew an astounding .135. The legal limit in Colorado is 0.08. The school immediately suspended Simas after his arrest, but Hawkins quickly reinstated him when he realized he did not have any quality receivers for spring ball.
The question that lingers now, is what does the University and Coach Hawkins do with Simas? On the one hand, you want to send a stern message to the team by dismissing him from the program; on the other hand, if Colorado doesn’t show significant signs of improvement come 2010, Hawkins will be forced out of Boulder. It’s a tough call to make.
