Cash strapped Eastern Washington University is doing a little PR to bolster its fan base and is attempting to place the university on the map. Inspired by Boise State’s smurf turf, athletic director Bill Chaves announced he will install red synthetic turf at Woodward Field. Chaves’ goal with the red turf is to create some notoriety to continue the school’s growth despite a program who last season lost in the first round of the FCS playoffs.

The red turf is being heavily backed by alum and Tennessee Titan Michael Roos who is graciously pledging $500,000.00. The school hopes to have the red carpet installed by the start of this season.

Some fans are ecstatic, others, not so much. It’s bad enough watching Boise State play on its smurf turf, “I can’t imagine what the red turf will look like on HDTV.” Gimmicks and ploys like this only count for so much. If Eastern Washington wants to get on the map, use the money for better coaches and recruiting. Winning games gets you notoriety, not the color of your field.
