Playoff Supporter of the Week-CNN Political Commentator Paul Begala
Every week, Playoff PAC highlights a prominent community leader in government, sports, or entertainment who favors college football reform.
- “As an orange-blooded Texas Longhorn, I must admit that my team is advantaged by the BCS — this week… But I’d trade a momentary advantage for a long-term solution: the Holy Grail of college football fans everywhere; Nirvana, El Dorado… a playoff.” – Democratic Strategist and CNN Political Commentator Paul Begala (Huffington Post, Nov. 27, 2008)
Quote of the Week-11 Teams in 11 Years
- “Only 11 teams have participated in the BCS Championship in its 11-year history… The rest have been shut out.” – Woody Paige, BCS Mess Sullies a Great Game, Denver Post (Nov. 15, 2009).
On Playoff PAC’s Blog…
- More on “Motherhood”
- “Only 15 percent of fans approve of [the BCS]. To steal words from Senator John McCain, ‘When you get down that low, you’re down to paid staffers and blood relatives.’ You simply can’t chalk-up BCS opposition to a portion of the public’s preferences. It’s not the people. It’s the product. Eight-five percent of college football fans can’t be wrong.”
- The Old Bowl System as Scare Tactic and Putative Measuring Stick
- “[W]e need not accept the BCS’s premise that the old bowl system is the only relevant measuring stick… [C]ollege football should not remain Cro-Magnon simply because it was once primordial.”
- “Now is the time for college football’s true shareholders to throw out the bums who needlessly run our beautiful game on only two cylinders. Ultimately, Playoff PAC hopes to advance a process of public deliberative discussion, without the false dilemmas presented by biased protectionists.”
In Other News…
- The BCS launched an official Facebook page yesterday, with the remarkable tagline “Where Every Game Counts Since 1998.” Judging from the page’s comments thus far, many seem to be joining simply to vent their frustrations. Playoff PAC hopes the BCS will use this page to listen to the public, not just propagate their flimsy arguments in favor of the status quo.
