During spring ball, Coach Jim Leavitt was preparing to unleash his version of the spread offense attack. Now it just may be an aerial attack with little to no running game. At one point, Moise Plancher, Mike Ford, Jamar Taylor, Richard Kelly and Aston Samuels were all fighting for the featured back position in Leavitt’s spread offense.
Well in the past three days, the competition pretty much disappeared and not in a good way. Jamar Taylor is out with a torn ACL and Mike Ford has just been suspended for the first two games for violating team rules.
By process of elimination, Moise Plancher will get the nod with Kelly and Samuels backing-up. If Ford can get his act together, he will certainly create some needed depth for Leavitt’s ground game. If not, it’s going to get pretty lonely with just Plancher in the backfield. Plancher did however amass 322 yards off of 69 attempts last season, but he needs to improve off of those numbers to be a true featured back.
This Big East is wide open this year, and with the Bulls’ run game depleting, the team is making it easier for conference foes to kick them while they are down and it’s making it easier for fans to start their chants of Jim must go.
