For those enrolled at Colorado State University, first-year head coach Jim McElwain is opening the doors to current students for football tryouts. McElwain is in bad need of linemen and hopes to fill the enormous void as he is trying to turnaround a program in the midst of three 3-9 seasons. Colorado State hired McElwain, who is coming off a national championship as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, with the hopes to bring much needed success to Fort Collins.
Students are invited to the Adolph Coors Foundation Auditorium in the McGraw Athletic Center on March 5 at 5 p.m. for an informational meeting. McElwain wants to attract some size as one of the first things he noticed was Colorado State has no “big guys.” McElwain is concerned that there are shortfalls on both sides of the ball, “you need to have in that 18 offensive linemen at least, and we just don’t have those numbers right now. Same thing on the defensive line. Some of those guys had to be moved to linebacker just because they’re not sized for D-linemen, if that makes sense, and so we need to be able to do that and to get those numbers to allow you to practice efficiently so you don’t have guys standing around.”
It is important to note, that in McElwain’s first Rams recruiting class, he signed six linemen all of whom are in excess of 270 pounds. The Rams open the season on September 2, 2012 against rival Colorado.
