Oregon's Mark Asper (#79) can block, tackle, and save lives.

Oregon guard Mark Asper can not only block with the best of them, but he is also a true Eagle Scout. During last night’s traditional Beef Bowl hosted by the famed Lawry’s in Beverly Hills, Asper performed an emergency Heimlich maneuver on Paul Diamond, a random diner and screenwriter veteran, who was choking on a slab of prime rib. When Asper saw Diamond struggling and portraying the universal sign of chocking with his hands clutched to his throat, the 6’7, 325 lbs guard bear hugged Diamond and performed a proper Heimlich maneuver ejecting the lodged meat from a blocked passage.

Diamond, a former writer for the popular TV show Married…With Children, was “quite grateful” for Asper being at the right place at the right time. Incidentally, Diamond’s son, who is a senior at Oregon and another restaurant patron tried to help, when Asper stepped in saying, “you don’t know what you’re doing, but I do because I have an Eagle Scout.” In Hollywood script fashion, Asper saved the day.

The Beef Bowl is a longstanding tradition featuring the two Rose Bowl teams. Though Oregon and Wisconsin eat on different nights, it is a friendly competition and publicity event showcasing who can eat the most prime rib. The Rose Bowl will be played on January 2, 2012 in Pasadena, California.
