Florida State cornerback Avis Commack was arrested by university police over the weekend for third-degree felony grand theft of an iPad he told investigators he found. The recent FSU grad allegedly stole an iPad in the school’s computer lab from an unsuspecting student. The incident occurred on December 6 at University Center D, where the victim stated she got up from her work station to grab a drink and upon returning she noticed her backpack, which included her iPad, was gone.
Commack became an immediate suspect as soon as IT forensic experts were able to track the iPad through recent log-ins to the university’s network. Sure enough, there were at least three log-ins with Commack’s student information.
Officers located Commack and approached him at FSU’s football facilities. Commack immediately handed over the iPad stating, “here, is the iPad I found” in one of the school’s stairwells. Incidentally, Commack wiped clean the iPad and formatted it to his liking. Commack was eventually arrested, but was booked and released by the Leon County Sherriff’s Office.
Clearly, Commack was not using his head as FSU is preparing for the Champs Sports Bowl against the Fighting Irish on December 30. Part of the bowl package includes a $420 shopping spree at the local Best Buy–almost enough to purchase his very own iPad.
As for his playing status, it remains to be seen, but first impression would indicate he will not participate as Commack was not at Saturday’s practice. The university has a strict policy in which athletes charged with felonies cannot compete in events.
