Mike McQueary is out, put on administrative leave

Assistant coach Mike McQueary, who witnessed the alleged abuse, was put on administrative leave amongst strong public scrutiny.

In somewhat mystifying fashion, after university trustees fired president Graham Spanier and iconic head coach Joe Paterno, the trustees thought it best to keep assistant coach Mike McQueary on the coaching staff. After public scrutiny, death threats, and plain disbelief, current school interim president Rod Erickson finally announced that McQueary will be placed on administrative leave and will not coach for the Nittany Lions.

McQueary, a former Penn State quarterback, was the graduate assistant who witnessed defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sodomize a child in the showers. Rather than confronting Sandusky, or doing anything to stop the heinous act, McQueary continued on his merry way and called his dad to let him know what he saw. His action, or lack thereof, is inexcusable, and certainly unexplainable.

If anyone should have done more to stop the abuse, it was certainly Mike McQueary. Penn State got it right by placing McQueary on administrative leave, they certainly got it wrong with timing. This should have been done immediately after the grand jury report went to print.
