What’s Wright for football, is wrong for faculty

The Wright State Raiders finally have a place to call home.

Wright State University is spending approximately $4 million for a new sports complex which boasts a $450,000 synthetic turf football field.  The Rinzler Student Sports Complex football field is the new home for the Wright State Raiders football club.  Typically, the Raiders plays all home games at a nearby high school, but thanks to a new field fans can experience Raiders’ football on campus.  Students and athletes are excited about the sports complex and watching their team at home, but some faculty members are throwing the yellow flag and are crying foul.

Professors are accusing the school of “misplaced priorities.”  According to union representative and econ professor Dr. Rudy Fichtenbaum, the faculty is outraged that the university is willing to excessively spend on a sports complex but will not budge on faculty pay.

The faculty is in the midst of renegotiating a compensation and benefits package, but are continuously hampered by the school’s position that there is not enough money for pay raises.  The faculty dismissed this proposition in the wake of a new $4 million sports complex.

Wright State University will not yield to faculty demands and will continue to build and improve the Rinzler Student Sports Complex.  University VP Matthew Filipic adamantly defended the complex saying it will be used not only for football, but for soccer, Frisbee, and other club sports all in the name of promoting the physical and psychological well being for students, faculty, and staff.

The Raiders’ first home game is September 24, 2011, when the University of Michigan (Flint) comes to town.
