Rumors are swirling in the virtual world that Pitt is joining the Big 10 conference. Some have doubts about the rumors, while others, including Ben Maller, see it happening.
Maller reports:
University of Pittsburgh athletics are moving to the Big 10 conference, according to sources close to the school.
Some athletes were informed of the move over the weekend, a little birdie tells me. This move sets up the natural rivalry with Penn State who joined the conference in 1990. It also gives the Big 10 another east coast presence.
Pitt will become the 12th school in the Big 10, with an official announcement expected by Thursday. This means you’ll be seeing a Big 10 football title game.
Neither the Big 10 nor the University of Pittsburgh has confirmed or denied this report. The Matador will keep you apprised of the latest developments.

under wannstedt pittsburgh is 35-26 and won only 1 bowl game in that span. That makes them so so. No one is denying they weren’t a great team before the 90′s and wannstedt has had good back-to-back seasons, but they probably wont go 9-4 or 10-3 in the big 10. Playing Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan every season wont be easy.

i think pitt is a little more than a so so football program considering some of the powerhouses the big10 already has. northwestern, illinois, minnesota, indiana. give me a break.

Its all about the $$$. And its true, the move will help Pittsburgh and the Big 10 with a conference championship game.
are the panthers even strong in football. how does this help?
I agree with JBauer, Pitt moving to the Big 10 will make the conference an even better hoops conference but its not really going to help the football teams. Pitt is just a so-so program.
Obama is a great president, leave hime alone! He is a true college football fan and wants a playoff system. I support him 100%. Maybe he can issue an executive order renaming the big east to the Least East.
Maybe Obama will step in and cancel this. I mean, he has nothing else to do.
In short, I’m not buying it. Given my recent track record on predictions, that means you should reserve your hotel rooms in downtown Indianapolis for the first weekend of December 2012 and the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game.
The rumor is false: http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/02/bogus-report-has-pittsburgh-set-to-join-big-ten.html
Great breakdown of a big 10 expansion, http://frankthetank.wordpress.com/2009/12/27/the-big-ten-expansion-index-a-different-shade-of-orange/
Pitt will also be a great addition to Big 10 basketball.
I figured this would happen at some point. It only makes sense considering the location, and a natural rivalry with Penn St. Hope this pans out!
Pitt v Penn State is back!!!! Wahooooo!!!!!
